SemkovoBulgaria’s Rila mountains

Getting here & around

Approach through Belitsa. Arrange the last climb to Semkovo before you travel.

By car

A car opens up the widest choice of village meals, shopping trips and excursions. Approach through Belitsa, then climb the 17–18 km mountain road to Semkovo. Aim to arrive before dark on your first visit. In winter, ask Coliving about snow clearance, the final approach, parking and suitable vehicle equipment.

Allow roughly 3–4 hours from Sofia Airport, 30–45 minutes from Belitsa town to Coliving, and 60–75 minutes between Semkovo and Bansko. These are useful planning margins; traffic, stops and winter roads can lengthen them. Follow the ordinary Belitsa approach rather than an apparent forest-road shortcut.

Group excursions geographically: Belitsa, bears and coaster; Banya and Razlog; Dobarsko with Gorno Draglishte or Bachevo; Bansko with one nearby activity. Give Rila Monastery, Melnik and the farther Rhodope villages separate days.

Without a car

A car-free stay works well when the last transfer, meals and main shopping are arranged before arrival. Belitsa railway station is about 4 km outside town, and a train or valley bus leaves the climb to Semkovo still to do. Ask the station or Belitsa information centre for the day's connections.

Arrange pickup through Coliving, obtain the driver's number and agree the return, particularly for an early train. The Technical University base can also arrange local transfers: start with +359 2 965 2020. Belitsa Tourist Information Centre: +359 744 42815 / +359 889 211567, at 8 Georgi Andreychin Street.

Once settled, walk from the door and use the apartment kitchen or arranged meals. Book drivers ahead for multi-village days or evenings in Bansko, with a clear time and price for the return to Coliving.

A footpath is not a driving route

Hut connections and mountain tracks do not imply public vehicle access. National-park roads have restrictions, and a navigation app can suggest a line unsuitable for your car. Keep to permitted roads and agree any remote transfer with someone who knows the approach.
