## Banya

A sociable soak at Izgreva, Banya, in 2021.

Pack a swimsuit even for a walking holiday. Down in the Razlog valley, Banya offers an afternoon measured in warm water and lunch rather than metres climbed. **Izgreva** has outdoor mineral pools, including a children's pool and smaller hot pools; **Regnum Banya Thermal Complex** welcomes day visitors year-round; **Pulse Therme Banya** suits a longer spa session.

Choose the experience before buying the ticket. A clear, cold day can be lovely in an outdoor pool; rain may favour a complex with more sheltered space. Ask about towels, lockers, the areas included and children's admission. Contacts and addresses are in **People to book**. Take the afternoon slowly and have the ride back to Semkovo settled before you soak.

## Dobarsko

The Transfiguration fresco in Dobarsko’s church of Saints Theodore Tyron and Theodore Stratelates.

The church of **St Theodore Tyron and St Theodore Stratelates** is modest from the outside. Inside, its wall paintings repay a much longer look. Built in **1614**, it is a place for close attention and a good explanation, not just a hurried photograph of its best-known image.

Find it on **Peta Street**. Open daily **09:30–17:30 April–October**, **09:00–17:00 November–March**. **[+359 892 234 615](tel:+359892234615).** Arrange a talk and follow the attendant's photography rules. A village stroll and lunch complete a satisfying half-day; Gorno Draglishte and Bachevo also fit naturally if you have booked a meal or ride.

## Gorno Draglishte

At **Deshka's House**, food gives the village visit its shape. Produce from the hosts and their neighbours becomes dishes such as chomlek and shupla; cooking, crafts, songs or dancing can turn lunch into a longer encounter. **46 Parva Street; [+359 886 436 708](tel:+359886436708).** Book the visit, explain dietary needs and agree how much cooking or demonstration you would like. Leave room in the afternoon as well as on the plate.

## Bachevo

Trade walking boots for stirrups at **Peri Volas**, with year-round riding through field and forest. A first lesson in the arena is a sensible introduction; experienced riders can ask for a longer mountain outing. **[+359 888 151 966](tel:+359888151966) / [+359 885 930 188](tel:+359885930188).** Describe your ability honestly and arrange the correct seasonal meeting point, guide and helmet.

## Ortsevo and the western Rhodope villages

**Ortsevo**, around **25 km from Belitsa** via the villages towards **Babyak**, brings broad views and a different mountain rhythm. Houses and fields spread over the high ground, with Pirin and the Rhodopes across the distance. The narrow roads suit a slow day with a few stops, food packed in the car and no tight return appointment.

The **Babyashka Chuka sanctuary** and walks towards **Veliitsa** make worthwhile subjects for a local guided outing. Agree the approach before leaving. These are lived-in villages: park carefully, stay out of private courtyards and ask before photographing people.
