## Money and realistic costs

Bulgaria uses the **euro**, adopted on **1 January 2026**. Older menus may still show leva; the fixed conversion was **€1 = BGN 1.95583**. Carry cash as well as a card and withdraw what you need in the valley. Do not count on an ATM in the resort.

Start the budget with your Coliving apartment quote, then allow for groceries, meals, valley transport, equipment and activities. Establish which workspaces and shared facilities are included, along with heating, linen, cleaning and tourist charges. For a long stay, frequent taxis can matter more than small differences in food prices. Agree cancellation and deposit terms before paying.

## Mountain safety and insurance

**Emergency: 112. Mountain Rescue Service: [+359 887 100 237](tel:+359887100237) / [+359 2 963 2000](tel:+35929632000).** Tell someone your route and expected return. Carry a charged phone, power bank and a detailed map, and know how to give your coordinates. Insurance should cover the activities you plan, including mountain rescue where needed.

For a lake walk, pack waterproof and warm layers, sun protection, food, water and a headlamp. Wear shoes suited to rough ground and start early. The resort can be calm while the high ground is windy or cloud-covered; turn back when visibility, storms or snow exceed your experience.

Follow permitted routes in Rila National Park. Camping and fires belong only in designated places; **do not swim in mountain lakes**. Leave plants where they grow, carry out rubbish and keep dogs controlled around wildlife, livestock and other walkers.

Use the topographic maps and route description together. Keep track of junctions as you walk and turn back before poor visibility makes the return difficult. For remote ridge traverses beyond the mapped routes, take a local mountain guide and a map covering the entire day.

## Families, access and pets

Build a family day around one clear reward: a view, a bear visit or a booked ride. Allow more time than adult walking estimates, and check each activity's age rules. Coliving describes itself as an adult community, so discuss children before booking an apartment.

For mobility needs, ask each venue about steps, surfaces and the route from parking. The bear sanctuary has substantial steps; village lanes, huts and trails can be uneven. Request measurements or photographs of the apartment entrance and bathroom, and ask pools about step-free entry and changing facilities.

Get pet acceptance before paying for your apartment and check transport and attraction rules separately. Winter arrivals need particular attention to the path from parking and the building entrance.
