Take a longer day for Rila Monastery, a railway journey or the villages beyond the valley.

## The narrow-gauge railway

Let the little train have the day. The **Septemvri–Dobrinishte line** threads the Thracian lowlands, **Velingrad**, the high country around **Avramovo**, **Yakoruda** and the Razlog valley. Ordinary passenger services make the most useful outings; steam and heritage trains are occasional events of their own.

Start from **Belitsa or Yakoruda**, choosing a short return ride or arranging a driver to meet you farther along the line. Ask at the station for the day's train times before paying for transfers. Build in a generous connection, especially on the return.

**Belitsa station is about 4 km from Belitsa town**, with Semkovo still uphill beyond it. Reserve a pickup for your arrival and the journey home. For groups **over ten**, arrange travel **at least ten days ahead: [+359 892 288 220](tel:+359892288220); [kvaklinov@bdz.bg](mailto:kvaklinov@bdz.bg)**. Once the practicalities are settled, the slow pace becomes the pleasure.

## Rila Monastery

Arcaded galleries, a painted church and a mountain courtyard: **Rila Monastery** shows another face of Rila. Its origins lie in the **tenth century**, and the complex is a **UNESCO World Heritage site**. Give it a long day of its own or visit while travelling to or from Sofia.

The road enters from the **western side of Rila**; there is no drive over the ridge from Semkovo. Dress for an active religious site, leave time in the courtyard and choose which museum displays interest you. The museums open **daily 08:30–19:30 from June through September**, **08:30–16:30 the rest of the year**. A combined ticket for the museum exhibitions is **€12**. English-language tours take about **50 minutes** and can be arranged on **[+359 896 872 016](tel:+359896872016)**.

The **Seven Rila Lakes** are another separate trip, approached from **Sapareva Banya and Panichishte**. They are not the lakes above Semkovo. Give them their own itinerary and check chairlift and park conditions; they make a poor last-minute addition to a monastery day.

## Leshten, Kovachevitsa and Ognyanovo

Stone lanes and old mountain houses are the point of **Leshten** and **Kovachevitsa**. Choose a few streets, walk slowly and leave time for lunch. The western Rhodope villages work best as a deliberately long excursion, with no other distant attraction competing for the afternoon.

**Ognyanovo** adds mineral pools on the way. Arrange day access at a pool or spa before travelling. In the villages, park without blocking the narrow streets and ask before photographing private courtyards. Reserve lunch in quieter periods, then return to Coliving with time to spare.

## Velingrad

A larger spa town makes a different sort of day out. Pair a booked pool or spa visit with **Kleptuza**, the karst-spring area in **Chepino**, and **Velingrad's History Museum** at **4 Vlado Chernozemski Street, Kamenitsa**. The museum opens **Monday–Saturday 09:00–17:00**, with last admission at **16:30**; **[+359 879 506 022](tel:+359879506022); [imvelingrad@gmail.com](mailto:imvelingrad@gmail.com)**. The railway can be part of the outing if a driver handles the transfers. Keep the combination modest: a proper soak leaves less time for a long train ride than it first appears.

## Melnik and Rozhen

Save **Melnik** for a long day with a driver. Wine, old houses and pale sandstone formations make a coherent outing, with **Rozhen Monastery** nearby. Reserve a cellar visit, have lunch and let the landscape provide the rest. Arrange transport before tasting; the journey back to Semkovo is part of the day's plan.

## Rafting on the Struma

**Kresna Gorge** trades the high-country quiet for moving water. **Adventure Net** offers an approximately **three-hour** programme with around **12 km on the river**, equipment, briefing and a shuttle back to its base. **[+359 888 889 371](tel:+359888889371).** **Reflip** and **X-Club / Rafting BG** are other choices; their full contacts are in **People to book**.

The usual season runs **March–November**, with the chosen descent and family suitability depending on water levels. Budget around **€40 per person** for the Adventure Net programme, plus transport from Semkovo. Ask about insurance and age requirements when booking. River shuttles return you to the rafting base; arrange the longer journey separately.
