## Bear Sanctuary Belitsa

The bears set the pace. One may be foraging while another rests out of sight, leaving visitors to look into the trees and wait. **FOUR PAWS and Fondation Brigitte Bardot** run this wooded sanctuary for rescued bears, providing lifelong care. The older name, **Dancing Bears Park**, recalls the exploitation from which many of its residents were rescued.

Allow **1½ hours**. Bulgarian- and English-language tours usually leave every half hour and take **30–40 minutes**. Admission is **€8 adults**, **€2.50 ages 7–18**, **free for six and under**; bring cash. Hours are **12:00–18:00 April–June and September–November**, **10:00–12:00 and 13:00–18:00 July–August**, with the **last tour at 17:30**. Check the year's spring reopening and winter closure by phone.

Wear shoes with grip: there are steep sections and **more than 100 steps**, making pushchairs and some mobility aids impractical. The final road approach has been affected by works, so ask about access when calling. **Andrianov Chark, above Belitsa; [+359 888 002 358](tel:+359888002358).** Groups of more than nine need a booking.

## Rila Fun Park

The neighbouring forest coaster supplies a quick change of tempo. Its **1,400-metre track**, two-seat carts and hand-controlled braking let riders choose how fast the trees go by. Children must be **over three**, with an adult accompanying those aged **three to eight**. **Dedovo, about 12 km above Belitsa; [+359 878 901 365](tel:+359878901365).** Call for opening, tickets and full rider restrictions before going up.

Combine it with the sanctuary if both appeal, with lunch in between or afterwards. Rila Swing is another option at the park; there is no need to fill every minute.

## Belitsa town

Stop in Belitsa with time for something beyond the supermarket. The **Historical Museum** introduces the town and valley, while the **Tourist Information Centre** helps with local guides, transport and small sights. Both are at **8 Georgi Andreychin Street**. **Tourist information: [+359 744 42815](tel:+35974442815) / [+359 889 211567](tel:+359889211567).** Ask about museum hours when arranging the rest of the outing.

## Waterfalls, rocks and small detours

The Semkovo road has its own smaller attractions: **Belishki Skali**, the rocks around **Babina Dupka**, the cascades called **Belishka Pastrina / Pustrina**, and the pot-shaped falls of **Kazanite**. **Raven** is a historic locality, and picnic places punctuate the wooded corridor. These make a good outing with a local guide who knows the paths and river approaches.

Add **Stankov Waterfall** near the bear-park area, **Misholitsa waterfalls** on the Belitsa side of the valley, or **St George chapel** to that conversation. **Tsarski Kladenets** carries a story associated with King Boris III. **Kopantsi's mineral spring**, traditionally used for washing textiles, is a curiosity rather than a developed swimming pool. For bathing, go to Banya.

## Errands in Belitsa

Stock the kitchen before climbing back to Semkovo. **Bella Market** is on the central/eastern side of town, while **Gorelski** and **Medi** are farther southeast. There are also groceries near the municipality and on the eastern side of town. **Map T13** marks these shops, the **pharmacy**, **Speedy delivery office**, **municipality** and **tourist centre**. Make parcel collection or a pharmacy stop early enough to fit ordinary business hours.

For orientation, the pharmacy is near **[41.94864° N, 23.55815° E](https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=41.94864&mlon=23.55815#map=16/41.94864/23.55815)**, Speedy near **[41.94714° N, 23.56118° E](https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=41.94714&mlon=23.56118#map=16/41.94714/23.56118)**, and Bella Market near **[41.94916° N, 23.56207° E](https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=41.94916&mlon=23.56207#map=16/41.94916/23.56207)**. Ask at Coliving or the tourist office for the current parcel collection point before a special journey. **Belitsa railway station is outside town**; allow for a separate transfer. The **Prophet Elijah chapel**, east of the centre, is a pleasant sightseeing lead rather than an errand stop.
